A poem for midwinter’s day.

Slaaikraal Dam, Makhanda, South Africa: reflecting the Waainek Wind Farm.

Midwinter’s day, the inflection point of the seasons.
Tomorrow we will turn toward the sun again, and wheel another spiral of our life’s dance.

I’ve stood on this spot before.
I was a boy then, with a clipboard in hand: a list of water birds to catalogue; and other dreams besides.

Many solstices have come and gone, and I spiral back past this spot once more.
Today in the mirror-blue there are reflections old and new.
I am made of both; and of the dreams still on my clipboard.

Midwinter’s day.

And I turn and wheel toward the sun once more.
